Job Description
To have a responsibility in conjunction with the medical staff for supporting the optometry service and delivering both independent and shared care for ophthalmic conditions, particularly acute eye conditions.
Examine patient’s eyes, test their sight, give advice on visual problems, prescribe, and fit spectacles when needed. Trained to recognize diseases of the eye, such as glaucoma and cataract as well as eternal health conditions like diabetes.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for taking all preliminary case history medical ocular history of the patient’s pre- post surgeries and their medications.
• Performing initial assessment for patient which includes taking unaided visual acuity, (BCVA) Best Corrected Visual Acuity, (VACC) visual acuity with glasses with the use of Snellen chart
• To perform objective and subjective refraction as the case necessitates with the aid of auto- refractometers, Retinoscopes, Phoropter, Lensometer and Trial lens set.
• Operates specialized equipment like OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, Specular Microscope, Corneal topography, Digital Retinal Fundus Camera, Biometry with the use of IOL Master 700 and Heidelberg OCT retinal imaging to detect any eye pathology.
• Fitting and dispensing hard/soft contact lenses.
• Cycloplegic refraction of infants and children and follow-up as required.
• Performs special diagnostic test to determine any ocular muscle deficiency
• Examines patients eye using slit lamp (lids, cornea, ant/post chamber and lens)
• Checks the intra ocular pressure IOP with application contact and non-contact tonometer’s
• With doctor’s consent prescribe medical glasses, contact lenses and advise patient on their proper usage and maintenance.
• Counsels the patient on how to use their vision properly and efficiently.
• Participates in the organization’s quality improvement and safety activities.
• Comply with the established SSMC OSHMS procedures of which they have been informed, instructed and trained.

• Must complete annual education requirements.
• Maintains and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
• Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
• Wears identification while on duty.
• Maintains positive working relationship with all staff.
• Actively participate along with line management towards implementation of OSHMS requirements.
• Report to the respective line manager any potentially hazard, unsafe act or condition, which may cause OSH impacts. Report all OSH hazard, near miss and incidents to the respective line manager.
• Maintaining the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether formally or informally recorded
• Communicating in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status
• Participating in department programs/committees, various hospital committees, and staff meetings (if requested)
• Participating in the orientation and training of new employees
• Maintaining professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars or on-line education units
• Completing and maintaining all regulatory requirements including: licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames
Qualifications
Experience :-
Required:
• NLT 2 years postgraduate experience in the field in a hospital setting
• (MSc ): NLT 1 year of post graduate experience in a relevant setting

Educational Qualification: Required:
• BSc in Optometry, or an equivalent qualification of NLT 3 years study duration
• AND Current National Professional Registration.

• MSc. Degree in related field
